Keep your summer cookouts safe and stress-free with simple grilling precautions
Nothing says summer like firing up the grill, but before you cook your next meal outdoors, take a few minutes to review some important safety tips. If you’re using natural gas or propane, a little preparation can help prevent accidents and keep your cookout stress-free.
Check Your Grill Before You Light
Start by inspecting your grill before each use. Look for cracked hoses, loose connections or signs of wear. If you use a natural gas grill, ensure the connection to your home’s gas line is secure and free of leaks. For propane grills, confirm the tank is tightly sealed.
A quick way to check for leaks is the soap-and-water test. Mix a small amount of dish soap with water and lightly brush or spray it onto the hose and connection points while the gas is turned on but the grill is not lit. If you see bubbles forming, that may indicate a leak. Turn off the gas immediately and have the grill inspected or repaired by a qualified professional before using it again.
Choose a Safe Setup
Placement matters. Always grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area, keeping your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings and overhanging branches. Never use a grill inside a garage, even with the door open, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Light and Cook with Care
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when lighting your grill. If the flame goes out, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes before relighting to allow gas to clear. Never lean over the grill while lighting it.
Once you’re cooking, stay close and keep an eye on the flame. Grease buildup can lead to flare-ups, so clean your grill regularly and keep a spray bottle or fire extinguisher nearby. Avoid wearing loose clothing that could catch fire.
Shut Down Safely
When you’re finished, turn off the burners and shut off the gas supply. For propane grills, always close the tank valve completely. Grilling is a great way to bring people together, and with a few simple precautions, you can enjoy every cookout safely. Taking a few extra minutes to check your equipment helps ensure your summer gatherings stay fun, flavorful and accident-free.
