One of the best things about working in the Tennessee Valley is seeing the ways curiosity shows up. Across Alabama, you’ll find teachers who know how to spark that moment when a student’s eyes light up and an idea suddenly “clicks.”

That’s exactly what the Tennessee Valley Authority STEM awards program is designed to support. The program will provide $1.5 million to fund STEM learning projects in classrooms and schools in TVA’s service area, in partnership with the TVA retiree organization, Bicentennial Volunteers Inc.

Beginning Aug. 1, K-12 educators can apply for awards up to $5,000 to bring science, technology, engineering and math learning opportunities to any type of classroom. Whether it’s buying 3D printers, adding new equipment to a science lab, building an outdoor classroom or incorporating robotics, it’s all about helping make big ideas possible. Teachers or administrators in public or private schools can apply at tva.com/learn through Sept. 15. Schools must be in the TVA service area and receive electricity from a local power distributor served by TVA.

Because our state plays a major role in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy innovation and so many other fields that depend on problem-solving minds it’s important that students get hands-on experience early, gain confidence, and develop skills that could shape the rest of their lives.
